Each storage figure is stored as a structured rule: jurisdiction, storage location, required temperature, starting event, duration range, classification (safety / quality / manufacturer / planning), assumptions, and source. The site is generated from these records; the build fails if a rule is missing its classification, source, or jurisdiction.
Current dataset
- 24 foods, each with pantry / refrigerator / freezer rules, freezing suitability, thawing methods, and refreezing rules.
- Values follow the FoodSafety.gov Cold Food Storage Chart, USDA FSIS topic pages, and the FoodKeeper dataset; each food page maps claims to sources.
- Method version: v1.1. The version appears on every page footer, and material changes are listed in the change log.
Calculations
Tools compute dates only from a user-supplied starting event (purchased, opened, cooked, frozen, thawed). They never infer an unknown event, never combine jurisdictions, and refuse to produce a date when the required facts are unknown — showing the conservative official rule instead. Freezer targets are always presented as quality targets, because food continuously frozen at 0 °F (−18 °C) remains safe indefinitely.
