United StatesReviewed May 2026Method v1.1EU/UK: package use-by dates govern
Keep opened milk refrigerated at 40 °F (4 °C) or below and use it within about a week of opening — sooner if the package says so. Milk can be frozen at best quality for about 3 months, with some texture separation on thawing.
The printed date is a manufacturer-controlled date: EU/UK use-by dates on milk are safety limits. The week-after-opening figure is general US guidance; the package instruction always wins if stricter.

Can I freeze it?
Safe, with quality loss
Milk can be frozen safely; expect separation and a slightly grainy texture after thawing. Best quality about 3 months.
Thawed milk is fine for cooking, baking, and smoothies; some people find it acceptable for drinking after a good shake. Higher-fat milk separates more.
Prepare & portion. Pour off a little to leave headspace — milk expands when frozen. Freeze in usable portions.
Package. The original plastic bottle (with headspace) or rigid freezer containers.
Thaw & use. Thaw in the refrigerator (a liter takes about a day) and shake well before use.
Thawing and post-thaw handling
Thaw in the refrigerator, never at room temperature. Shake well; use within 3–4 days of thawing.
