United StatesReviewed May 2026Method v1.1EU/UK: package use-by dates govern
Refrigerate cooked beef — steak, roast, or browned ground beef — for 3 to 4 days at 40 °F (4 °C) or below. In the freezer it stays safe indefinitely, with best quality for 2–6 months.
The 3–4 days is safety guidance; the 2–6 months is a quality target.

Can I freeze it?
Generally suitable
Cooked beef freezes well. Freeze within the 3–4 day window; best quality for 2–6 months.
Sliced roast or steak dries slightly on reheating; freezing in gravy or sauce protects the texture. Browned ground beef freezes and reheats almost unchanged.
Prepare & portion. Cool promptly in shallow containers. Slice large roasts before freezing so portions thaw quickly.
Package. Airtight containers or freezer bags; cover sliced meat with gravy or stock where possible.
Thaw & use. Thaw in the refrigerator and reheat to 165 °F (74 °C), or reheat from frozen in soups and sauces.
Thawing and post-thaw handling
Thaw in the refrigerator (allow about 24 hours for small portions), in cold water in a leak-proof bag with water changes every 30 minutes, or in the microwave followed by immediate cooking. Never thaw on the counter. Reheat leftovers to 165 °F (74 °C).
